Corn sowing reaches 13% of the area in RS

The sowing of corn has advanced in the areas north of Rio Grande do Sul, according to the latest Conjuncture Report released by Emater / RS-Ascar last Thursday (06). Even with the rainy period of the last days, 96 thousand hectares are sown with corn, which corresponds to 13% of the estimated total for the 2018/19 harvest, which is 738 thousand hectares.

According to Emater-RS, frost in these areas has caused some burning on the tips of the emerged leaves, which are recovering and, in principle, no replanting is necessary. Germinating and already emerged maize crops have presented adequate population of plants. However, the low temperatures slow the development of the same.

Winter Cultures

In wheat, phytosanitary treatments (fungicide application) were practically paralyzed due to the high humidity, which resulted in plants wet for several hours and caused the appearance of powdery mildew, leaf spots and rust pustules.

Flowering crops are also susceptible to the development of giberela in the spikelets, but so far there is no significant occurrence of pests. The wheat crop shows 36% of the flowering crops and 24% of the grain filling, which is close to the average observed in recent years.

Canola presents about 70% of the crops in the stage of filling the grain, and 7% are already maturing. Frosts should have little negative impact on the crop, since this one presents greater sensitivity to this stress after the end of the flowering, and producers still expect a good crop, since the good sanity of the culture points to this. The crop presents itself as an alternative to the producers that are in search of crops in substitution to the wheat.
