Tool allows to monitor deforestation in Cerrado in real time

The second largest biome in Brazil, with 2 million square kilometers, the Cerrado now has a tool to monitor deforestation in the region. Released by National Institute of Space Research (INPE), the tool Hold closed accompanies the actions in the region in real time.

According to information from the Ministry of Science, the tool collects images produced by the Wi-Fi camera installed on the Cbers-4 satellite. On a daily basis, they will be transferred to the Brazilian Institute of Environment and Water Resources (IBAMA) to monitor areas of illegal deforestation.

Through the system, it is possible to check the Cerrado deforestation by state and by municipality. It also offers maps to compare the progress of plant cover removal since 2000, based on information from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) and the Brazilian Forest Service.
