Deputies veto bill granting debt forgiveness to family farmers

The Finance and Taxation Commission of the Chamber of Deputies rejected Bill 1356/15, by Danilo Forte (PSDB-CE), which sought to forgive the rural debts of family farmers in the Brazilian semi-arid region affected by crop losses due to prolonged droughts between 2013 and 2014, according to Agência Camara.

The request for rejection of the proposal was made by parliamentary Rodrigo Martins (PSB-PI), who claimed financial and budgetary inadequacy to prevent the project from advancing. However, there is still room for recourse to it again in plenary.

“Although it is fair, given the state of public calamity that many Brazilian municipalities are experiencing as a result of prolonged drought or unpredictable natural disasters, I understand that the serious financial crisis that has hit the country makes it impossible to grant full remission of debts of small producers, “said Martins.
