Maize and sugar boost cargo handling at the Port of Santos

The Port of Santos recorded a record cargo handling in January. Shipments and landings totaled 8.99 million tonnes, the best result for the month of January, with growth of 13% over the previous record (in 2013) and 22.2% over the same month last year, according to data gives Companhia Docas do Estado de São Paulo (Codesp).

Last month, shipments by the port grew by 28.2%, totaling more than 6 million tons. The high was boosted mainly due to the increase in corn shipments (193.1%). The product is in the final stage of the 2016-2017 harvest and marked the second best historical result for the month, falling only from January / 2016, when 1.7 million tons were exported.

The second largest product in January / 2018 was sugar, although it registered a decrease compared to 2017. It was 897.7 thousand tons, against 929.4 thousand tons last year. The fall was 3.4%. 

Soybean commodities (grains and meal) recorded the third-largest move in January. Shipments of these commodities reached their best historical figure for the month: they were 737.5 thousand tons, an increase of 8.7% compared to last year, when the previous record was recorded (678.7 thousand tons).

Pulp was up by 42.7% over last year. The mark of 356.4 thousand tons places the merchandise as the 4th in movement in the Port of Santos. In the month of January of the previous year the record was 249.7 thousand t.
