Brazil analyzes markets to start exports of foot-and-mouth disease vaccine

The export of vaccines against foot-and-mouth disease, especially for China, may be an alternative for Brazilian industries, when Brazil will begin the gradual withdrawal of vaccination against foot-and-mouth disease, beginning in May of next year. The assessment is made by the secretary of Agricultural Defense of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), Luís Rangel.

The secretary explained that they lack to build a protocol of manipulation of exotic viruses, unauthorized in Brazil, so far, because of the biological risk they offer. The ban could end because the South American Commission for the Fight against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (Cosalfa) points out that it is necessary to establish a strategic antigen bank for use in the event of reintroduction of foot-and-mouth disease in any of the countries of South America .

The installation of the Regional Bank of Antigens / Vaccines against Foot-and-Mouth Disease (Banvaco), supported by Brazil, may also demand part of the national production. Estimates indicate that the strategic stock of antigens (vaccine raw material) should be enough to produce 10 million to 15 million doses to address possible health emergencies (outbreaks of disease). The United States and Canada have already shown interest in participating in the roll out of the bank.
