Temer: proposed free trade agreement with Chile is ambitious

After meeting Friday with Chilean President Sebastián Piñera, President Michel Temer said that the two talked about Piñera’s proposal to sign a free trade agreement with Brazil, informs the “Agência Brasil” . Temer called the agreement “ambitious” and said that Piñera’s visit has resulted in breakthroughs on the economic front.

“We welcome President Piñera’s proposal to negotiate a new and ambitious free trade agreement. It is no longer a question of eliminating tariff barriers, we are already on another level. Now, our goal is to overcome regulatory barriers to trade between Brazil and Chile, “Temer said. He added that the two also talked about a greater integration between Mercosur and the Pacific Alliance and about physical integration in South America.

Piñera said that since independence, Chile has a privileged relationship with Brazil and that there are no physical and commercial borders between the two countries. He noted that, although short, the visit to Brazil was very fruitful, with the start of negotiations to sign a free trade agreement between the two countries. “Something we always want and now we will become reality,” said Piñera. The Chilean president underscored the volume of Chilean investments in Brazil, which currently stands at US $ 30 billion, and reiterated efforts to expand the partnership in the fight against cyber attacks and drug trafficking.
