Ministry of Agriculture wants harmonization on pesticide laws

During the meeting of the Southern Agricultural Council (CAS), the Minister of Agriculture, Blairo Maggi, asked that members of the take decisions to harmonize legislation among participating countries, such as those relating to the use of pesticides and fertilizers, at the time, Maggi recalled that there are substances allowed in Paraguay and banned in Brazil. “These are points that need to be further debated by the council ministers.”

The minister, also defended, to include in the discussions of the council the ongoing negotiations related to agribusiness for the conclusion of an agreement between Mercosur and the European Union. The entity is made up of ministers from Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, Argentina, Chile and Bolivia.

Also on the occasion, the ministers of the CAS signed a suit on the adaptation of the sector to the proposals of the Paris Agreement. In the balance sheet of the council’s activities, joint efforts were made for animal and plant health in the region, for agricultural sustainability, adaptations to climate change and the importance of the region as a supplier of food to the world and family agriculture.

One of the points in a document signed by the ministers highlights that agriculture is one of the sectors most vulnerable to the impact of climate change, “which can affect the food production and livelihoods of the rural population.” Hence, the importance of moving forward on issues such as access to the Green Climate Fund, according to the text.
