Buzzard-brown was one of the insects with high incidence in soybean crops in the 2017/18 harvest in Mato Grosso. It appeared due to the rainy season in some regions of the state. Many growers have difficulty identifying them, as it deepens in the soil and at the time of planting can be at depths greater than 30cm.

According to Lúcia Vivan, entomologist of the Support Foundation for Agricultural Research of Mato Grosso, MT Foundation, the condition of occurrence of the root-bug may have errors. “When this insect appears at the stage where the plant already has a number of roots that tolerate the attack, the damage of the plant is not perceived. This makes it difficult to identify the insect and contributes to the maintenance of its incidence in soybean cultivation.”
To monitor the occurrence of this pest in the areas, to monitor through pits with measures of 30x30x50 cm of depth, to analyze the presence of the population of the stink bug in the soil, to be attentive with the flock of the adult insects are measures that help in controlling this pest.
“There is no way to succeed in the harvest without monitoring the crop. There is no cake recipe, but there is no way to say with certainty what the next plague will be in the next harvest. Monitoring is always the best way to control pest attacks and not have losses of productivity, “says the researcher.
Another recommendation of the entomologist is the rotation of modes of action of chemicals and pest management. The continuous use of the same active principle decreases the effectiveness of the control. According to the researcher it is important to apply for bed bugs and also rotation. “And the monitoring has to be done constantly and in every phase of plant growth. If left to do the monitoring only when the insect harms the crop and this population is at high incidence may run the risk of not being able to control in a way that protects the crop. “
The use of pest-resistant cultivars is also pointed out by the researcher as one of the alternatives for pest control. But Lucia warns that “a variety can have resistance to the particular pest and not have to another, so the producer has to be well aware and, I repeat, monitor always.” These and other orientations were made by Lúcia Vivan during the XVIII Technical Meeting of the MT Foundation that takes place from Wednesday (16) and goes until this Friday (18) in Cuiabá. More than 300 participants from the main soybean producing regions in Brazil are receiving information about the panorama of the crop and perspectives for the next cycles of the agricultural activity.
