Plan ABC should contribute to gas reduction by up to 40%

In its launch, in 2010, the ABC Plan for Low Carbon Emissions 3 million hectares with sustainable agriculture. In 2016, according to data from Embrapa, the area was expanded to 11.5 million hectares occupied by the LPF integration – Lavoura, Pecuária and Floresta – and contributed to the reduction of 35.1 million tons of CO 2 in the atmosphere.

According to the Ministry of Agriculture, The ABC Plan is in force until 2020, when the country will have reduced greenhouse gas emissions by about 40% compared to 2005, according to a commitment made voluntarily by the United Nations Climate Conference (COP 15) in 2009, in Copenhagen, Denmark.

The ABC Plan offers a line of credit to the rural producer to develop its activity with less environmental impact, being composed of seven programs, six referring to mitigation technologies and one with adaptation actions to climate change: Recovery of Degraded Pastures; Integration of Cropland, Livestock, Forest (ILPF) and Agroforestry Systems (SAFs); Direct Planting System (SPD); Biological Fixation of Nitrogen (BNF); Planted Forests; Treatment of Animal Waste and Adaptation to Climate Change.

Since March 28 this year, the Multi-institutional Platform for Monitoring Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reductions in Agriculture – ABC Platform, a result of the partnership between the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA), Embrapa and Ministry of the Environment. The platform monitors greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in agriculture, as well as the carbon stock in the soil.
