Brazil wants to renew antidumping duties on milk imports

Milk producers in Brazil reinforce the request on anti-dumping duties on imports of New Zealand and European Union milk powder. The issue was discussed at the National Commission of Animal Husbandry of the Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA).

In a statement, CNA said it has been working with the government to renew the anti-dumping duties on imported powdered milk for another five years. The current extension period expires in February 2019.

“Without tariffs for imports applied to these countries, it is possible to resume dumping and consequently damage the domestic milk market,” explained Commission President Rodrigo Alvim.

The decision to renew the application of tariffs imposed by Brazil is in the hands of the Ministry of Industry, Foreign Trade and Services (MDIC), which is expected to present its opinion on the matter soon.

“The extension of anti-dumping duties is necessary for the development of the domestic dairy sector, which may be affected by the return of unfair trade practices and the resumption of high volumes imported,” said Thiago Rodrigues, the Commission’s technical adviser.
