The use of crop diversification in the tobacco fields of Santa Catarina yielded local producers a R $ 190.7 million gain in revenues from the sector. The data were presented by the Tobacco Industry Interstate Union (SindiTabaco).

According to data collected by the union, farmers sowed 35,097 hectares of maize and 4,915 hectares of beans. The production of maize was 266,737 tons – considering the average price of R $ 570 per ton, the total of the safrinha from Santa Catarina reached R $ 152 million. Regarding the beans, the harvest was 12,779 tons and average price of R $ 1,945 per ton, the yield was estimated at R $ 24.9 million. The survey pointed to more than 12 thousand hectares of pasture and 3,394 hectares of soybeans, with an approximate turnover of R $ 13.8 million.
In 2018, the estimate of income of the Maize, Beans and Pastures Program in the producing regions of the South of the Country – Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina and Paraná – showed that the planting of grains in the tobacco field yielded around R $ 550 million to producers. A total of 110,948 hectares of maize and 17,377 hectares of beans were planted, with an expected yield of R $ 414.2 million for maize and R $ 68.3 million for beans.
Tobacco growers also grow other grains after harvest, especially soybeans which yielded around R $ 67.5 million in the 18,364 hectares planted. In relation to the pastures, the survey counted 40,391 hectares in the three states.
