After seven years on the rise, the value of agricultural production declined in 2017

The production value of Brazilian crops reached R $ 319.6 billion in 2017. The number represents a decrease of 0.6% over the result of 2017, in addition to being the first negative result recorded after seven years. The data are from the Municipal Agricultural Research (PAM), released today (13), by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

According to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), the decline in revenues was driven by a drop in the production of corn (-12.7%), beans (-28.8%), potatoes (-50.9%) and wheat 41.9%).

On the other hand, soybeans continue to be the country’s main agricultural crop. Last year, the value of oilseed production represented 35.1% of the total. Overall, the cereal, legume and oilseed crop grew 28.2% in 2017, compared to 2016, with a total of 238.3 million tons. Soybean represented 48.1% of the total produced in this group, followed by maize (41.0%).

Even with lower revenues, the planted area was larger in the last year and grew by 2.1%, reaching 79.0 million ha. The increase in area and productivity gains provided record crop yields, with soybeans and maize growing by 18.9% and 52.3%, respectively, in 2017.

The state with the highest revenue in the field was Sorriso (MT), with R $ 3.3 billion, up 2.4% compared to 2016. The municipality had a 1.0% share of the country’s total production value .
