Brazil can avoid agricultural losses with investment in science, says Embrapa

At a solemn session of the Chamber of Deputies, in Brasília (DF), the president of the Brazilian Agricultural Research Corporation (Embrapa), Maurício Antônio Lopes, said that Brazil needs to invest in science to save on losses in agricultural production.

He cited the example of a technology that last year avoided the use of nitrogen fertilizer in the 34 million hectares of soybeans planted in Brazil and led to the economy of 13 billion dollars.

“Thirteen billion dollars means 14 times the budget of Embrapa in a single year with a single technology. So when I say that doing science is expensive, I say that not investing in science is that it is very expensive for any country, “he said, according to a statement from Agência Câmara de Notícias.

Still according to the president of Embrapa, wealth funds are a possibility in a context where science can not be at the mercy of ups and downs of the economy and constant budgetary constraints.
