Brazil registers 88% of renewable energy sources in June

Renewable sources have a large participation in the installed capacity matrix of electricity generation and production in the country. In June, they represented 81.9% of the installed capacity of electricity generation and 87.8% of the total verified production in the country.

In comparison with the same month of the previous year, in terms of installed capacity, these sources grew 7,401 MW, being 3,450 MW of hydroelectric generation, 2,219 MW of wind power, 1,365 MW of solar source, 524 MW of biomass, and reducing thermal sources to fossil fuels. The information is from the Bulletin of Monitoring of the Electric System, released monthly by the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

In the one-year period, hydro generation registered a 3.5% increase in installed capacity, reaching 102,228 MW. The wind power source grew 20.7% and corresponds to 12,931 MW. The biomass increased by 3.7% and totaled 14,657 MW. Solar, despite the smaller total volume, grew 577% and reached 1,602 MW.

The installed capacity of the total of the plants that use oil and coal was reduced in this period by 2.8% and 0.4%, respectively. Compared with the main thermal sources, biomass, non-fossil organic matter of animal or vegetable origin, reached a 9.1% share of installed generation capacity in June, a growth of 3.7%. The source is constantly growing and now has 561 plants. Different biomass fuels are used in Brazil to generate electricity: charcoal, wood waste, sugarcane bagasse, rice hulls, black liquor, biogas, elephant grass and palm kernel oil.

There were new generating units in 12 plants, which meant an expansion of 841.6 MW of generation incorporated into the Brazilian Electric System (SEB). There were 201.4 MW of wind power and 640.2 MW of hydraulic power in six states: Pará, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, Santa Catarina, Bahia and Ceará. Five new transmission lines also went live during the month, totaling 585 km in length. With the new projects, SEB recorded a total of 144,323.8 km of transmission lines.
