CNA wants to double area with irrigated agriculture in Brazil

With the objective of giving greater support to irrigated agriculture in Brazil, Confederation of Agriculture and Livestock of Brazil (CNA) launched last Tuesday (20), during the 8th World Water Forum, the National Irrigation Commission.

“The CNA will do everything that is necessary so that irrigation in Brazil, which means less than 7 million hectares, can in the medium term double the irrigated area,” said the president of the entity João Martins Martins.

The National Commission will be composed of CNA, federations of agriculture and livestock and associations of irrigators. It will act as a focal point for discussions of the actions, policies and positions of the sector on the use of water for agriculture and livestock. The work will be done directly in the discussions in the National Council of Water Resources, in the Executive and in the Legislative.

“Brazil is the sixth largest country in the world with irrigation and has the potential to be much more. We need to exploit this potential in a sustainable way to improve production and greater gains for the Brazilian rural producer, “said MPLS secretary Odilson Silva, who also participated in the launch of the National Irrigation Commission.
