O National Extended Consumer Price Index (IPCA-15) registered a variation of 0.14% in May, the lowest rate for the month since 2000, according to data from the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). This scenario was favored by the retreat in the price of foods with significant weight in the index that reflects household consumption.
Even with the increase of 35.68% in onion, 6.10% in vegetables and 3.75% in (3.90%), fish (-3.51%), whole chicken (-1.60%), rice (-1.35%) and fruits (-0.97%) had price declines .
In a note, the general coordinator of Studies and Analysis of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MPLS), José Garcia Gasques, points out that “several factors may have influenced this increase in prices, but the most probable are, the first months of the year is rainy, and the variation related to the seasonality of the products, mainly of the vegetables “.
On the other hand, says Gasques, “cereals (-6%), meat (-1%), and poultry and eggs (-4.4%) have been reduced in price this year. As these products have a high share of household expenditures, their contribution has been favorable to the results of the inflation index.
