Elevated soil moisture impairs corn and rice harvest in RS and SC

The month of August was marked by the return of rainfall to the Southeast region, especially to the southern region of the states of São Paulo and Mato Grosso do Sul, according to Esalq / USP’s TempoCampo system. The South and North regions remained with regular rains and in considerable volumes, while the Midwest and Northeast remained dominated by dry weather throughout August. In Mato Grosso there were only isolated rain showers, which benefited the development of cover crops, such as millet, brachiaria and crotalaria, but affected the ripening and harvesting of cotton crops.

In São Paulo, the milder night temperatures during most of the month favored the producers of vegetables and vegetables of the interior of the State. In the south of the country, despite the frosts observed during the month, they favored the development of the orchards and the quality of the fruits of the mountainous region, but they also made more frequent the need of fungal treatments because of the high humidity. This meteorological condition also affected the crops of canola, white oats, 1st crop beans and hortigranjeiros of the region.

Frosts were observed in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, which affected the regrowths in the regrowth phase. MS pastures, in addition to the negative effects of the cold, are also experiencing difficulties due to intense cloud cover, reducing growth rates especially in the areas of low natural fertility of soils.

The high soil moisture in the Southern Region continues to favor the development of wheat crops in the region, but delaying harvesting of rice and maize crops in Rio Grande do Sul and Santa Catarina. In the Southeast and Midwest, rainfall was sufficient to meet the water demands of the worshipers during one part of the month, but without raising soil moisture. This means that if the rains do not continue in a regular way throughout September, the effects of drought will be felt even in regions that have already experienced more rain during the month of August.

Sugar cane

The return of the rains to the interior of São Paulo caused some impact on the sugarcane cutting and transport processes, but they significantly relieved the water stress to which the sugar cane plantations were submitted in practically the entire state. In addition, these rains favored the cane plantations already harvested and in the process of budding for the next year, bringing a more positive outlook for the next harvest.
