Ethanol consumption in Brazil falls 6%

The consumption of hydrated ethanol in Brazil reached 13.642 billion liters in 2017, down 6.5% from the 14.586 billion consumed in 2016. The data are from National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP). According to the agency, the drop was driven largely by the loss of competitiveness in relation to gasoline, whose sales increased by 2.6% in 2017.

For anhydrous ethanol, the increase in consumption was also 2.6%. Anhydrous and hydrated, sales of this biofuel fell by 2.4% from 26,201 billion liters in 2016, to 25,562 billion liters in 2017.

Fuel sales in the Brazilian market in 2017 totaled 136.025 billion liters, an increase of 0.4% compared to the 135.436 billion liters registered in 2016.
