Irregular climate impacts performance of summer crops in RS

The summer grain crops of Rio Grande do Sul are developing unevenly. This is because the climate is not following the pattern observed in the last five years. In this harvest, the climate has been damaging the farmers of the South and the State Campaign region.

According to a preliminary survey by Emater-RS, drought may have negative impacts to the productivities of crops in progress, mainly of corn and soybean in the South and Campanha regions.

In these regions, despite the record of rain during the period in question, these were insufficient, both in volume and in scope, creating distinct scenarios for the crop, often within the same municipality. This has hampered more accurate assessments of the real productive potential of crops and, consequently, of the definition of the average municipal incomes of these regions.

On the other hand, in the northern part of the state, the situation is different. Crops have a more uniform pattern, indicating that, with the exception of one or another specific case, yields should confirm the initial estimates and, in some cases, exceed them. What seems certain is that the current crop will not repeat the excellent yield obtained last year, but neither will it be a total disaster.
