Mercosur and European Union are close to agreeing

The free trade agreement between Mercosur and the European Union between June and July this year. The statement is from the ambassador of the European Union (EU) in Brazil, João Cravinho, who also points out that only some differences in the agroindustrial and industrial sectors for the negotiations to be concluded.

In a note from Agência Brasil, Cravinho did not want to advance what differences between the two blocks. “That’s part of the business secret,” he argued. He admitted, however, that the differences delay the negotiation process, since “they have some impact and some value for the European side and the Brazilian side, and the Mercosur side in general.”

The ambassador said that despite the current difficulties, both European and Mercosur consumers will have many benefits with the agreement, noting that Brazilian producers will be able to put coffee, meat and numerous other items on the shelves of Europe’s retail trade, in a manner easier and cheaper.

“I also want Brazilian consumers to drink good European wine and buy European products at much lower levels than they are currently available,” Cravinho said.

The European Union and Mercosur have been negotiating a free trade agreement for 20 years. The signature was postponed throughout this period due to the resistance of industrial or agricultural sectors on both sides. French farmers have been one of the sectors that have been more resistant to the signing of a European Union-Mercosur document, fearing competition from Brazilian beef on European soil.
