USDA revises US sugar supply and demand projections

The US Department of Agriculture projects a tight domestic supply and demand balance for sugar in 2018/19 for the US. In its first projection, the department expects sugar production to fall from 8.37 million in 2017/18 to 8.12 million metric tons in 2018/19.

However, despite the higher imports in 2018/19 due to the higher expected supply in Mexico, the USDA projects that final stocks represent only 12.6% of domestic demand, compared to 14.6% in 2017/18 and 15, 1% in 2016/17.
