Value of agricultural production should fall 2.5% in 2018

The estimate of the Gross Value of Agricultural Production (VBP) for 2018, calculated in August by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MPLS), is R $ 565.6 billion, 2.5% lower than that obtained in 2017, which was of R $ 579.8 billion. The crops have gross sales of R $ 384.2 billion and cattle raising, of R $ 181.3 billion. The reduction in real value of crops compared to last year is 1.2% and livestock production is 5.1%.

Desempenho negativo da pecuária afetou resultados do VBP

The decline in livestock value was decisive in the reduction of VBP. In absolute terms, it represents R $ 10 billion, with the greatest impact on pork. “All products are in decline, but the greatest setbacks are observed, in addition to pork, in chicken, milk and eggs,” says José Garcia Gasques, general coordinator of Studies and Analysis of the Secretariat of Agricultural Policy of the MPLS .

Reduced productivity in the field, coupled with lower prices than last year, was the main factor responsible for the lower VBP. Lower prices for products important in the formation of VBP such as coffee, sugar cane, orange, grape, cassava, beans, and rice, affect the results. In addition, contributed to the loss of productivity of this crop, which according to Conab is 5.2%.

The best results are observed in six products of the studied relationship, cotton, with a real high of 44.4%, cocoa, high of 27.6%, coffee (7.9%), soybean (10.6%), tomato 10.9%) and wheat (79.2%).

A higher ratio of products has been getting results lower than last year. The most affected are: peanut, – 14.1%; rice, -18%; banana, -8.7%; potatoes, -5.4%; sugarcane, -10.7%; beans, -30.2%; orange, 19.4%; cassava, -17.8%; corn, – 10.8%; grape, – 26,8%.

The results of the regional VBP show that six states, Mato Grosso, São Paulo, Paraná, Minas Gerais, and Rio Grande do Sul, generate 59.3% of the value. Between the states of the Northeast, and North, Bahia and Pará, lead, respectively, the generation of production value.
