Vegetables show price drop in February

The price of vegetables fell in February. Last month, lettuce, potatoes and carrots had considerable reductions in the country’s main food supply centers (Ceasas), according to a survey by National Supply Company (Conab).

According to Conab, the reduction in prices is related to the poor quality of the products, caused by the excessive rainfall and heat in the main producing regions. The trend is that this fall in prices will also reach the final consumer, who will have less colorful, but cheaper vegetables.

The tomato, after showing significant increases in previous months, has begun to lower prices in some markets. The potato recorded a fall in prices in almost all markets, except for the capital of São Paulo where there was some stability (increase of 0.98%) and in the market of Rio de Janeiro where the decline was only 1.26%. In the other markets, the price falls were between 4.17% in Brasilia and 18.12% in Goiânia.

Fruits – In relation to banana prices, there was a rise in five analyzed states, a marked trend since December, with emphasis on Espírito Santo (5.49%) and Pernambuco (25.40%), with a fall only in CeasaMinas (12.88%). Watermelon had price increases in six Ceasas, mainly in the Federal District (46.05%) and Ceará (23.07%).
