Young population is a minority of the countryside

The rural population of the countryside is aging. This is because, the number of people aged 65 years accounts for 21.4% of rural dwellers. In 2006, when the last survey was carried out, this figure was 17.52%. This is what is indicated in the Agricultural Census, prepared by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

On the other hand, research shows that the number of young people with age between 25 years and 35 years in the field was lower in this period, from a percentage of 13.56%, to 9.48%.

In the 55-65 age group there was an increase of four percentage points, from 20% to 24%. The partial data were presented by the coordinator of the Rural Census, Antonio Florido, in a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies. “On May 23, we registered 5,067,656 registered establishments out of an estimated total of 5,254,953 properties and we can see the aging of the rural population,” he said.

“We also detected an increase in the number of retirement and pension resources in the field, which reinforces age-group data, confirming that the rural population has even aged,” said the research coordinator.
